Intro Activities

1) Welcome Letter This is just a brief example of a welcome letter that I could use for my classroom. This letter was written for a ninth grade language arts class. However, if a few modifications were made to the letter, it could be used for many different grade levels. This is a helpful template/example to have.

2) Getting to Know You Interview This interview would probably be more appropriate for middle school students. It is a great, brief interview that allows students to interact on the first day in order to establish a good classroom environment. It includes questions about the students goals for the year as well as things they would like their teacher to know. If you wanted to take this further, you could even plan a quick presentation or writing assignment in which students describe/introduce their partner to the class.

3) Summer Reading Assignment Sheet This is a sample worksheet that you can give students to complete for the first day of school. The reason that this is under the Introductory Assignments category is because this is something that you could go over with the students on the first couple of days of school. It is good because it develops comprehension skills with vocabulary, giving summer reading a larger, specific purpose.

4) Syllabus Scavenger Hunt This is a great activity in order to test the students knowledge on the students understanding of the syllabus. This is perfect for middle school and high school. This syllabus scavenger hunt is for a specific class/school but it could easily be modified for any classroom.

5) Create a Caricature This seems like an extremely fun activity that helps students to get to know each other. This is an online activity where students can create their own caricature based off of themselves. They answer different specific questions about themselves and then design what they want their character to look like. Then throughout the year, the students can post quotes or things that they are interested in. You could even use this for them to create caricatures based off of historical figures or figures from literature. This is a tool that can be used in diverse ways. You could also use this for a vocabulary activity.

6) Alphabet Autobiography This is a fun tool that can be used for a multitude of activities. You can create an organizer and write a word/sentence for each letter. This can be a good tool for getting to know students in the classroom. For every letter the students can write something about them that begins with that letter or revolves around that letter.
